Neuter Commuter
The Neuter Commuter provides low-cost
spay/neuter surgeries for the animals of Marion County
residents. Surgical appointments cost $25 per animal (or a
reduced fee of $5 per pet with proof of low-income or government
assistance). The appointment fee includes the animal's surgical
sterilization, rabies vaccination, county license and microchip.
Each household can have up to 3 animals spayed/neutered by the
Neuter Commuter each rolling year.
Rabies vaccinations are available from 2 - 3 p.m. each day at
the scheduled Neuter Commuter location with the purchase of your
animal's county license. Schedules are posted above to provide
information on the Neuter Commuter locations for afternoon
rabies vaccination services.
Please call the Neuter Commuter message line (352-307-1351) to
book an appointment. All schedules are subject to change.
Appointments are necessary for spay/neuter surgery. This service
is only available to Marion County residents.
What to know prior to your appointment:
Pets must be dropped off and picked up at the
assigned time and location.
Animals must not have food after 6:00 p.m.
the night before surgery.
Animals must not have food or water the
morning of surgery.
All dogs must be on a leash and all cats must
be in a carrier.
What happens the day of the appointment:
Animal owners check in with their animals at
the table, and staff will process their payments.
When the paperwork is complete, the animal is
brought aboard the bus for a brief physical examination to
ensure that the animal is healthy enough to have surgery and is
within the size limitations of the bus (79 lbs is the max
weight).
After the last customer has given us his/her
animal, we begin our procedures.
Animals are anesthetized, shaven and prepped
for surgery by veterinary technicians, then our staff
veterinarian takes over and performs the spay/neuter surgeries.
After the surgery is complete, staff remove
animals from the surgery table and into the cages built into the
bus for recovery until pick-up by the owners.
Between 2 - 3 p.m., staff are available to
the public for the procurement of rabies vaccinations and county
licenses.
At 3:30 p.m., animal owners arrive for
retrieval of their animals.
Before the animals are taken home, one of the
staff members will talk about the day's surgery and will inform
customers about the special post-surgery care their animals will
need.
