 Green Farm Practices
Home to over 1,000 horse farms,
Marion County is proud of its equestrian roots. But in
order to minimize their carbon hoof
prints, it's important these farms utilize
"Best Management Practices."
Thanks to our year-around sunshine and limestone-rich soils which make it ideal for raising and training horses, Marion County holds the reins on "Horse Capital of the World." However, because of having a karst topography we must be more proactive about what we put down on the ground that can negatively effect our water resources. As fresh, clean water becomes more and more of a precious commodity world-wide, we must be vigilant about protecting it for our future. Unfortunately, many farms don't even realize they are potentially polluting our waters through improper handling of manure, misuse of pasture fertilization, and overstocking the land. Anything that touches the ground can potentially leak into our springs and aquifer. We provide free educational information, classes and one-on-one farm visits geared toward assisting farms with adopting Best Management Practices to protect and preserve our freshwater resources.
