Marion County Fire Rescue is the second largest fire department north of Orlando with 22 full-time fire stations, seven volunteer fire stations and more than 600 employees, including line personnel and staff. MCFR's full-time dual-certified firefighters are also either emergency medical technicians (EMTs) or paramedics and serve more than 320,000 citizens, cover 1,600 square miles (which is larger than the state of Rhode Island) and respond to an average of 170 emergencies a day. MCFR also added ambulance transport to its growing mission on October 1, 2008. These fire rescue professionals have the skills and equipment to respond to structure, brush and vehicle fires; medical emergencies involving cardiac arrest, respiratory distress and trauma; vehicle accidents requiring extrication; hazardous materials incidents; natural disasters and many other emergencies. They also provide emergency medical and inter-facility ambulance transport. When not responding to 9-1-1 calls, MCFR crews train for worst case scenarios and give back to the community by supporting charitable projects. MCFR employees host toy and clothing drives during the holidays, participate in Operation Stuff the Bus for homeless children and raise money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association and United Way of Marion County. |
