The Forest Public Library first opened its doors in the fall of
1987. Housed in an old, retired bookmobile, the library was run entirely
by volunteers. In February 1996 a new 4.600 square foot library opened
-- the first to be constructed using Marion County tax dollars. In
addition to the $96,000 appropriation from the county, the Felburn
Foundation contributed $100,000.
On February 13, 2010 the new 10,800 square foot, LEED gold-certified
Forest Public Library opened, more than doubling the library space for
Forest area residents. Property acquisition and construction costs were
largely funded by a U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development
Community Development Block Grant and Local Option sales tax proceeds.
