The Marion County Solid Waste Department Disposal Division
provides for the management and overall operations of the
Baseline Solid Waste Facility which includes the Landfill and
the Transfer Station. This division provides for the
proper disposal of incoming wastes, inspection of wastes, and
the monitoring of franchised hauler operations within the
county. It maintains regulatory compliance with ground water and
landfill gas monitoring programs at Baseline and several other
old landfills. Another service it provides is for leachate
management by operating a leachate collection system and
disposal plan. It also operates and maintains the landfill gas
collection system and flare station within Florida Department of
Environmental Protection guidelines and provides support for the
landfill gas to energy facility.
-
In 1987 Marion County took over operations of the
Baseline Solid Waste Facility Landfill which was previously
operated by private companies.
-
The Baseline Landfill receives approximately 200,000 tons
per year of waste and is open from 7:00 am to 5:00 pm Monday
through Saturday. The Baseline Landfill will be completely
filled with the next 6 to 7 years.
