The Stormwater Division has initiated a countywide Watershed Management Program. Work is underway in both the Ocklawaha and Withlacoochee watersheds. The Divisions efforts on the Southwest Florida Water Management Districts side of the County are co-funded by the district.

The program is designed to:

  S Identify water quality issues
S Assist in management of assets
S Map the Countys stormwater management system
S Identify illicit discharges into the stormwater management system
  S Identify immediate maintenance issues
S Identify best management practices to address issues

Low Impact Development, or LID, is an emerging concept in land development and stormwater management. One of the goals of LID is for the hydrology of the developed site to mimic the hydrology of the site before development. Thus, runoff flows and volume are closer to natural conditions.

Another goal of LID is to prevent and remove runoff-borne pollution. Many site planning and engineered Best Management Practices can be considered LID practices.

The Stormwater Division initiates capital projects to address known water quality and drainage issues. Many of these issues are identified through Watershed Management Plans. Some capital projects are designed by the engineers and staff of the Stormwater Division while others are designed by consultants.

Regardless of who does the design, the Stormwater Division ensures that the appropriate stormwater management technology is applied to each unique situation and that the project is completed in a timely and cost-effective manner. Innovative, cutting-edge engineering technologies, such as low impact development practices, are implemented as part of capital projects wherever possible.

Marion County is a participating community in the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). As a participant in the NFIP, Marion County has adopted Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs). These maps identify the location of floodplains in Marion County and are used to determine if a structure is required by Federal Law to have flood insurance. At the present time, there are two sets of FIRMs for Marion County. The current effect FIRMs were developed in 1983. These FIRMs are now out of date and will remain in effect only until August 28th, 2008. On August 28th, 2008 a new set of FIRMs will become effective for Marion County. The FIRMs show substantial changes in the extent and location of floodplains in Marion County.
